Matthew Pearl was born in 1975. He grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and graduated from Harvard University and Yale Law School. He has also been a literature and creative writing teacher at Harvard University and Emerson College, and has been a Visiting Lecturer in law and literature at Harvard Law School. Currently, he lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
